MECSA was awarded the contract in a 40/60 JV with China Communications and Construction Company (CCCC).
Four lane dual carriageway Balanced Cantilever Bridge, with 1 km approach road from both ends of the bridge structure, the bridge deck structure is 16 800 wide excluding walkways and 1 122 700 long @2.5% slope, the approach road is 19m wide including 2.5m shoulder lanes on each side. The superstructure of the bridge consists of a single cell concrete box girder bridge, the approach spans superstructure is to be constructed by the Incremental Launching method and the main spans constructed by the balance cantilever method, it is mainly characterised by the 260 000 spanning across the great Mtentu river, carried by 148 000 high viaduct piers sitting on either side of the river.
Work is set to start on the project in the first half of 2023 in what is expected to be the tallest bridge in Africa and associated Roads. The bridge will run across the Mtentu River in Mbizana in the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Municipality, rising 223m into the Eastern Cape sky.
The Mtentu Bridge forms part of the N2 Wild Coast Road (N2 WCR) project, which is SANRAL’s flagship project in the Eastern Cape. The N2 WCR project comprises a 410km route running from the Gonubie Interchange in East London to the Mtamvuna River on the border of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, near Port Edward.

MECSA was awarded the contract by SANRAL in 50 / 50 JV with CONCOR. Site handover took place in January 2019 with forecast completion by December 2022. This will be the second largest bridge in Africa using a cable stay technology. The bridge will span 580m between the gorges and is 195 m above the river.
POLIHALI DAM AND TRANSFER TUNNEL – PHASE 2 WATER PROJECT
