MECSA Pioneers infrastructure reform In emerging market

The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) appointed MECSA to execute the upgrading and modernisation of its existing concomitant infrastructure in a bid to align the country with international rail standards. The four and a half month project which commenced in November 2015, saw two teams working around the clock so to ensure the first phase of the project.

A 1.6km test track, a 600m offloading area, warehouse, running and lifting area and roadworks completed the balance. The highly anticipated inauguration of the first test train, scheduled to be at the end of January 2016 MECSA demonstrated its considerable ability in multi-faceted mediums of construction.

Completion of new mental health facility for the Department of Health Northern Cape that includes 300 bed mental hospital which was left incomplete in 2009. Part of the process is a redesign as a result of the Department of Health having updated their methodologies on mental health care.

MECSA Builds Innovation set to Challenge

The contract, developed in collaboration with Accelerate Property Fund and Fourways Boulevard, positions the retail centre as one of the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. The expansion has seen an addition of 400 000 m² to the existing 62000 m² and boast an additional 280 000 m² of parking and 120 000 m² of retail space.

The project also pioneered the construction of the largest work in Pre-cast concrete, a relatively new technique in South Africa for a project of such enormity. The R2 billion extension will see a total of 68 500 m³ of in-situ concrete poured over a 28-month period. The multibillion-rand project will provide MECSA with an opportunity to showcase its innovative building prowess and poise the group favourably within an ever-innovative and competitive market, to secure work through alternative and conventional forms of construction.
